Twelve detained in connection with gold mine collapse in Northern Kurdistan

Twelve individuals are now in detention as part of an inquiry following the collapse of a gold mine in the town of Iliç in Erzincan province in northern Kurdistan.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with a professional committee concluding its findings.

According to the report, four of these individuals were found to have significant involvement in the mine collapse and have been sentenced to imprisonment following court orders.

This brings the total number of detained individuals to 12, with eight initially remanded in custody and two others granted conditional release during the investigation.

The mine collapse occurred on February 13, 2024, trapping nine workers beneath the rubble.

While the bodies of four workers have been recovered, five are still missing.
