An explosion shook the heart of Cologne’s vibrant nightlife district on Monday, prompting a significant police response, according to local media reports.
The blast occurred in a central area between Rudolfplatz and Friesenplatz, leading North Rhine-Westphalia state police to close off the road and advise residents to stay clear of the vicinity.
The explosion caused substantial damage to a nearby building. The area, known for its numerous bars and restaurants, was bustling at the time. Reports from local broadcaster Radio Köln indicate that one person sustained injuries in the incident.
Although the fire department responded to the scene, they confirmed that there was no need for firefighting efforts. Later in the morning, police updated their social media account, announcing that the road had been reopened.
However, they did not provide further details about the explosion’s cause, which occurred outside a nightclub.
