Iraq plans to add Kazakhstan to its roster of gas suppliers as it works to fuel its rapidly growing electricity facilities, pending the completion of its own major gas development projects, an Iraqi official announced.

Ali Shadad, spokesman for the Parliament’s Oil and Gas Committee, said the plan will be included in the 2025 power strategy to be submitted by the Electricity Ministry to Parliament, aiming to prevent potential fuel shortages.

“The Electricity Ministry is set to finalize a contract with Kazakhstan for the supply of nearly 20 million cubic meters (MCM) of gas,” Shadad told the Iraqi news agency on Thursday.

In 2023, Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Turkmenistan to address a gas shortfall after Iran reduced its gas exports due to financial constraints. Iraq, OPEC’s second-largest oil producer, has relied heavily on Iranian gas as its own vast natural gas reserves, estimated at over 3.5 trillion cubic meters, remain underdeveloped due to years of conflict.
