QatarEnergy and TotalEnergies SE have signed an agreement to jointly develop a 1.25-gigawatt-peak (GWp) solar power complex in Iraq, a significant milestone in expanding renewable energy in the region.

This initiative forms part of TotalEnergies’ Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), launched in 2021 to advance sustainable energy development in Iraq.

QatarEnergy announced that it will acquire a 50% stake in the solar project, subject to regulatory approval, while TotalEnergies will hold the remaining 50%. Located in Iraq’s Basra region, the facility will feature 2 million high-efficiency bifacial solar panels on single-axis trackers. Phased construction is scheduled to commence operations between 2025 and 2027, with the complex expected to provide electricity to approximately 350,000 homes.

Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, CEO of QatarEnergy and Qatar’s energy minister, expressed optimism about the partnership: “We look forward to collaborating with our strategic partner, TotalEnergies, to advance this important initiative for Iraq’s energy sector. We appreciate the Iraqi government’s trust and are committed to supporting Iraq’s solar energy ambitions.”

Alongside the solar project, QatarEnergy also holds a 25% share in the GGIP consortium, which focuses on Iraq’s natural resource development and flared gas recovery. TotalEnergies leads the consortium with a 45% share, while Iraq’s Basra Oil Company owns the remaining 30%.
