Turkey’s Interior Ministry Appoints Governor to Mardin Municipality

Mardin

Mardin’s Parliamentarian from the Democratic Party (DEM), Saliha Aydeniz, has announced the appointment of a government-appointed trustee (Qayyum) to the Municipality of Mardin.

This decision, made by Turkey’s Ministry of Interior, has drawn sharp criticism and raised concerns over democratic principles.

Aydeniz took to the social media platform X to express her condemnation, stating, “Qayyum was appointed to the Municipality of Mardin, which was regained after 8 years by the will of the people. Appointing a trustee to replace democratically elected officials is outside the bounds of law, morality, and democracy.”

She further denounced the government’s long-standing disregard for the people’s mandate, calling it a “fascist policy” and adding, “We don’t accept Qayyum.”

The move comes just moments before authorities surrounded the municipality building and as Mardin Province imposed a 10-day ban on demonstrations, rallies, and public activities.

Reports also suggest that a governor has been appointed to the Municipality of Batman.
