Atwan Atwani, head of the Finance Committee in the Iraqi Council of Representatives, emphasized that the upcoming national census will serve as the primary basis for distributing revenue and budget allocations among Iraq’s provinces.
In a statement, Atwani explained that the census would enable a more accurate provision of services, development, and investment by establishing a detailed population database. This approach aims to replace the current reliance on estimates and forecasts for provincial funding, including allocations to the Kurdistan Region.
“The census will provide essential data to rank provinces based on poverty, unemployment, service delivery, and housing conditions,” Atwani added.
The census is scheduled for November 20 and 21, 2024, during which a curfew will be enforced across Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region.
