Kurdish Women’s Campaign Urges Iraqi Leadership to Halt Executions of Activists in Iran

A coalition of 120 women activists, journalists, politicians, and human rights defenders from South Kurdistan has called on Iraq’s President Dr. Latif Rashid and First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed to intervene in stopping the execution of two Kurdish activists, Varishe Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi, by Iran.

Under the banner “Stop the Execution of Fighting Women,” the campaign seeks to rally support for Moradi and Azizi, two Eastern Kurdistan activists sentenced to death by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The group emphasized that these executions represent punitive actions against the Kurdish people, particularly targeting women activists.

In a signed letter addressed to Iraq’s President and First Lady, the activists urged them to adopt a strong national stance, reminiscent of the efforts of the late Mam Jalal Talabani, in advocating for the release of Kurdish freedom fighters. “We expect you, as a national duty, to work toward canceling this unjust decision by Iran and securing the freedom of these two women fighters for our people,” the letter stated.

The campaign’s participants expressed that such a move would not only reinforce unity within the Kurdish community but also resonate with the aspirations of freedom-loving Kurds everywhere. The appeal concludes with a call for solidarity in preventing further oppression of Kurdish activists and ensuring justice prevails.
