Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp emphasized the importance of Kurds and Christians having a role in shaping Syria’s future state.
In a report to parliament, Veldkamp highlighted information from the Netherlands’ special envoy, who met senior Syrian officials to stress the need for a comprehensive transitional policy and the protection of minorities.
“It is very important that Syria’s Christian, Kurdish, and other minorities participate in the comprehensive political transition process,” he stated.
Veldkamp noted that the Netherlands and the European Union are exploring ways to support Syria’s political transition.
While affirming there were no plans to open a Dutch embassy in Damascus, Veldkamp added that efforts were underway to find ways to assist Syria.
The Netherlands’ special envoy to Damascus, Gijs Gerlag, delivered his country’s message to Syrian transitional government officials during meetings held from the 2nd to the 4th of this month.
During a visit to Damascus, the French and German foreign ministers called for an end to the clashes in northern Syria, stating, “The clashes in northern Syria must end, and the security interests of our Kurdish partners must be protected.”
