A U.S. military and diplomatic delegation discussed the reform and unification of the Peshmerga forces with representatives from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the Peshmerga Ministry, and the Kurdistan Region Presidency in Erbil.
Officials from the Kurdistan Region met with a U.S. delegation led by Major General Kevin Leahy, commander of the coalition forces in Iraq and Syria, to address Peshmerga reform, according to the Kurdistan Region Presidency. Both sides underscored the importance of coordination and tackling challenges to advance the reform process.
A statement issued after the meeting highlighted discussions on coordination, joint efforts, and the reform and reorganization of the Peshmerga forces.
Both parties emphasized their mutual cooperation to ensure the success of the reform initiative.
The meeting also addressed the broader regional situation and recent developments, as reported by the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
In 2018, the Peshmerga Ministry and coalition forces agreed on a 36-point plan for reforming and organizing the Peshmerga forces.
While some joint brigades have been established, a comprehensive resolution remains pending. The PUK’s Unit 70 forces and the KDP’s Unit 80 forces have not yet been integrated into the Peshmerga Ministry.
