The Director of the Near East, Middle East, and North Africa at the German Foreign Ministry, Tobias Tunkel, held a meeting with the commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, in Rojava. The meeting discussed efforts to combat ISIS and address ongoing regional challenges.

Tobias Tunkel later emphasized that “rights and interests of Syrian Kurds can best be safeguarded in an inner-Syrian dialogue with Damascus,” as he wrote on his X account following the discussion.

Additionally, he underscored the importance of direct talks between the SDF and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), stating, “urgent issues to be addressed in direct contacts between SDF and HTS leadership.”

Despite calls from Western countries for the SDF to negotiate with the Syrian administration and reach a legal agreement, significant progress has yet to be achieved, as multiple meetings have ended without a resolution.
