Russia has described its latest talks with the Syrian administration as “constructive” but acknowledged the difficulties facing the country.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov stated that a Russian delegation met in Damascus with Ahmed al-Sharaa, head of the Syrian administration, for a three-hour discussion, which also included an official dinner.
“The meeting was generally positive. We had in-depth discussions with the interim government’s leadership, including Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheibani and Health Minister Maher al-Sharaa, who is the older brother of Ahmed al-Sharaa,” Bogdanov told reporters.
While emphasizing the longstanding ties between Russia and Syria since the country’s independence after World War II, Bogdanov reiterated Moscow’s commitment to supporting Syria’s unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty. He also highlighted Russia’s continued willingness to assist Syria in economic and infrastructural development, including energy resources, fertilizers, and grain supplies.
Discussions on Justice and Accountability
The Syrian administration released a statement confirming that talks focused on issues of sovereignty, transitional justice, and accountability for victims of the Assad regime’s actions.
“The Russian side affirmed its support for the ongoing positive changes in Syria and its role in rebuilding trust with the Syrian people through compensation, reconstruction, and recovery efforts,” the statement read.
Both sides discussed mechanisms for transitional justice to ensure accountability and justice for victims of the war. The new Syrian administration reiterated its commitment to engaging with all stakeholders to build a future based on justice, dignity, and sovereignty.
Future of Russian Military Bases Requires Further Consultation
Regarding Russian military bases in Syria, Bogdanov confirmed that Moscow appreciates that its personnel and facilities remained unharmed during recent political shifts.
“We hope this stability continues, and that Russia’s interests in Syria remain protected,” he said, adding that further consultations are needed to determine the future of Russia’s military presence in the country.
The talks concluded with both sides agreeing to continue discussions on military, economic, and political cooperation as Syria navigates its transition.
