Following the approval of the budget amendment by Parliament, Iraqi Government spokesperson Basim al-Awadi stated that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani “calls on both the Kurdistan Regional Government, through its relevant institutions, and the Federal Ministry of Oil to immediately commence implementation of the amendment.”
In a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Media Office, al-Awadi explained that the recent step aims to optimize the utilization of Iraq’s natural resources, with a particular focus on the country’s oil wealth.
He emphasized that the goal is to ensure these resources become a cornerstone for national stability and a catalyst for further progress in development plans and programs.
Al-Awadi also conveyed that the Prime Minister “expresses his appreciation for the responsible and constructive step taken by the esteemed Council of Representatives in approving the amendment to the Federal Budget Law of the Republic of Iraq for the fiscal years 2023-2024-2025.”
“The government is committed to implementing its program based on the priorities previously approved by the representatives of the people, aimed at meeting the aspirations of all Iraqis across the country,” he added.
Additionally, al-Awadi highlighted the vital collaboration between the government and the Council of Representatives, which plays a crucial role in ensuring the continuation of development, reconstruction, and reform efforts.
According to al-Awadi, these efforts have already begun and will remain steadfast.
The Iraqi parliament approved an amendment to the budget law on Sunday, which raises the cost of oil production in the Kurdistan Region. The approval took place during a session with the participation of 176 members of parliament.
