Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein visited the headquarters of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) in Rabat, where he met with Director General Dr. Salim AlMalik to discuss expanding cooperation in cultural and educational sectors.

Dr. AlMalik welcomed the Iraqi delegation and outlined ICESCO’s mission, emphasizing the organization’s broad membership, including Iraq. He reaffirmed ICESCO’s commitment to supporting Iraq and proposed, “the adoption of Baghdad as the Capital of Islamic Culture,” highlighting the city’s historical and cultural significance.

Minister Hussein expressed appreciation for the initiative, commending ICESCO’s role in advancing education and culture.

He underscored the devastating impact of Da’esh’s attacks on Iraq’s heritage, particularly in Mosul. “Many archaeological sites were destroyed, and thousands of heritage pieces were looted,” he said, adding that “Iraq, through recovery diplomacy, has successfully reclaimed thousands of stolen artifacts.”

He also advocated for moderate intellectual approaches to cultural issues and proposed opening an ICESCO office in Baghdad to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

“Cultural diplomacy is a key pillar of Iraq’s foreign policy, enhancing our position on the global stage,” he noted, expressing Iraq’s desire to expand collaboration with ICESCO, especially in protecting cultural property and recovering antiquities.

The meeting concluded with Dr. AlMalik giving Minister Hussein a tour of ICESCO’s headquarters, including exhibitions highlighting Islamic and civilizational heritage.
