Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra stated on Thursday that the country’s new government will determine the future of Russian military bases based on national interests.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Abu Qasra mentioned that Syria might allow Moscow to retain the bases if the arrangement aligns with Damascus’ interests, emphasizing that the deal would be accepted only if it benefits Syria.

Abu Qasra noted Russia’s stance toward Syria’s new government has improved and said Damascus is reviewing Moscow’s demands. “In politics, there are no permanent enemies,” Qasra said in reference to Russia.

Syrian Defense Minister also indicated that Russia could potentially retain control of the Hmeimim air base and Tartus port.

Last month, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov stated that “nothing has changed” and that further negotiations are required for Russia to maintain access to the bases.

After the overthrow of former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad in December, Russia began withdrawing its assets from Syria, casting uncertainty over the future of its military presence in the country.
