On Saturday, Germany witnessed large-scale demonstrations against the far-right, with the biggest protest in Munich attracting over 200,000 participants, according to local police.
The demonstrations, held under the slogan “Democracy needs you,” aimed to oppose any collaboration with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of the upcoming legislative elections.
The “Munich Multicolor” organizers emphasized promoting diversity, human dignity, and democracy. Similar protests occurred in other cities, including Hanover, where 24,000 people participated, and Berlin, where 160,000 gathered last Sunday.
The protests were sparked by Friedrich Merz, the CDU’s chancellor candidate, supporting a parliamentary motion with the AfD to ban unregistered migrants from entering the country. While traditional parties had previously refused to cooperate with the far-right, the CDU reaffirmed on Monday that it would not form a government with the AfD, despite its strong showing in polls.
