Egyptian sources confirmed progress in mediation efforts to overcome obstacles in implementing the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
Key humanitarian aid, including mobile homes, tents, food, and fuel, has been allowed into affected areas, marking a significant step forward.
The prisoner exchange process, a cornerstone of the agreement, is expected to proceed as planned on Saturday. This exchange will involve the release of Israeli detainees and Palestinian prisoners, as agreed in previous negotiations.
Contrasting Statements
While mediation efforts seem to be advancing, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office dismissed reports of understandings with Hamas as “fake news.” Meanwhile, Hamas issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to the ceasefire agreement and urging Israel to honor its obligations.
“We are not interested in the collapse of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. We are keen to implement it and oblige the occupation to abide by it in full,” Hamas said, adding that mediators are working to ensure adherence to the agreement’s humanitarian provisions.
Progress in Prisoner Exchange
Palestinian sources close to the negotiations have reported advancements that could ensure the smooth implementation of a new prisoner exchange process. According to one source, mediators have secured an initial Israeli pledge to honor the humanitarian protocol, starting immediately.
Hamas has also assured Egyptian officials of its readiness to proceed with the sixth batch of the prisoner exchange as soon as Israel fulfills its commitments.
Ceasefire Agreement Details
So far, the truce has resulted in the release of 16 Israeli detainees in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners over five batches. The first phase of the agreement, spanning 42 days, is set to include 33 Israeli prisoners in exchange for approximately 700 Palestinian prisoners.
With mediation efforts gaining momentum, the implementation of these measures offers hope for sustained calm and progress in the region.
