Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, in an interview with France 24, said that US President Donald Trump’s Gaza proposal is unacceptable, adding that “ISIS fighters are still active in Syria, which is a threat to Iraq.”

Hussein stated that it is not suitable to move Palestinians from their areas to other regions, as this would create another displacement crisis, threatening the entire region, not just the Palestinians.

Regarding Iraq’s relations with neighboring countries, he expressed concern about the continued presence of ISIS fighters in eastern Syria, posing an ongoing security threat to Iraq.

The Iraqi foreign minister mentioned that 26 prisons are currently under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), holding between 10,000 and 12,000 prisoners, all of whom are ISIS leaders and fighters.

Hussein revealed that he had begun talks with Syrian officials on whether to transfer the prisoners to the Syrian central government or keep them under the SDF’s control.

On US plans for the region, Hussein noted that the situation in the Middle East is different and that further discussions with the Americans will take place.
