The Turkish Presidency said in a statement that Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, during which they discussed Turkey-U.S. relations, as well as regional and global issues.
“Erdogan expressed his strong belief that Turkey and the U.S., as two allies, will continue their cooperation in a result-oriented, sincere, and solidarity-driven manner in the new period,” the statement noted.
The statement mentioned that Erdogan highlighted the need for increased consultations between Turkey and the U.S. on all matters, given the evolving regional and global developments. He voiced support for Trump’s efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
Furthermore, the statement quoted Erdogan saying, “Turkey has been striving for a just and lasting peace since the start of the war and will continue to do so.”
Regarding the issue of lifting sanctions on Syria, the statement emphasized that removing these sanctions would contribute to “restoring stability in the country, enabling the new administration to function, and achieving normalization.”
The statement also highlighted Erdogan’s expectation that the United States act in Turkey’s interest in the fight against “terrorism”, while calling for the lifting of CAATSA sanctions and resolving the F-16 procurement and Turkey’s re-participation in the F-35 program.
