U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he planned to speak with Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.
Trump stated, “A lot of work had been done over the weekend,” adding, “We will see if we have something to announce maybe by Tuesday. I will be speaking to President Putin on Tuesday.”
He said that the goal is to determine if the war can be brought to an end, saying, “Maybe we can, maybe we can’t, but I think we have a very good chance.”
Regarding the content of the planned call, he explained, “We will be talking about land. We will be talking about power plants … we have a lot of it already discussed very much by both sides, Ukraine and Russia. We are already talking about that, dividing up certain assets.”
On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke about the “next steps” in the Ukraine ceasefire proposal.
Trump also stated on Friday that he had productive talks with Putin, expressing optimism that the war in Ukraine could soon end. On Truth Social, Trump stated, “We had very productive discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday, Thursday, and there is a very high probability that this horrific and bloody war will finally end.”
Putin called the process of restoring U.S.-Russia relations “difficult” but said, “The situation is beginning to change.” Speaking at a Russian Security Council meeting, Putin highlighted efforts by the Trump administration to improve ties between Moscow and Washington despite significant challenges.
Earlier, Steve Witkoff, Trump’s Middle East envoy, confirmed that “there will be a call with both presidents this week,” adding that they are also continuing to engage and have conversations with Ukraine.
Witkoff arrived in Moscow on March 13 for talks on a proposed 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. The U.S. and Ukraine decided to present a 30-day ceasefire to Russia.
While Putin expressed support for a ceasefire, he outlined a series of conditions for achieving peace.
