A devastating bombing outside a cafe in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Sunday resulted in the deaths of at least five people, according to police reports. The explosion occurred as patrons inside the cafe were watching the European soccer final between Spain and England on a screen, said Maj. Abdifitah Aden Hassan, a spokesman for Somali police. He informed reporters that at least 20 others were injured in the blast.

Images shared online purportedly from the scene depicted a fire raging outside the cafe following the explosion.

"Some spectators were injured while attempting to jump the perimeter wall of the cafe, and others were wounded in a stampede," witness Ismail Adan recounted over the phone.

Most of the casualties were on the street at the time of the explosion, he added.

The perpetrator of the attack remains unknown at this time. However, Mogadishu and other parts of Somalia frequently experience attacks from the Islamic militant group al-Shabab, which opposes Somalia's federal government and relies on the support of foreign troops to maintain control.

Despite recent months of relative peace in Mogadishu, the tranquility was disrupted on Saturday with an attempted jailbreak at a Mogadishu prison. During the incident, which claimed at least eight lives, inmates convicted of participating in al-Shabab attacks engaged in a gunfight with prison guards before being killed.

The Somali government is currently engaged in a significant offensive against al-Shabab, a group the U.S. has identified as one of al-Qaida's most dangerous factions. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has declared "total war" against the extremists, who dominate large areas of central and southern Somalia and have been the focus of numerous U.S. airstrikes in recent years.
