Kurdistan Region Security Council Criticizes Baghdad for Overlooking Its Role in ISIS Deputy Caliph’s Elimination

The Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) issued a statement emphasizing its pivotal role in tracking and eliminating ISIS Deputy Caliph and the terrorist group’s head in Iraq and Syria following years of intelligence gathering and coordinated operations.

According to the KRSC, this success was achieved through extensive intelligence efforts and collaboration with the Kurdistan Region Government (KRG) Security Council, the Global Coalition, and later, Iraqi federal forces. The statement reaffirmed the KRSC’s unwavering commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring regional security.

However, the council expressed concern over the omission of its role in the Iraqi Prime Minister's official statement regarding the operation. The lack of recognition for the KRG’s security institutions, it warned, could strain future cooperation between regional and federal authorities.

The KRSC reaffirmed the essential role of Kurdistan’s security institutions in countering terrorist threats and urged the Iraqi federal government to foster a stronger, more cooperative security framework to maintain peace and stability across Iraq.

This statement comes amid ongoing discussions about security coordination between Erbil and Baghdad, particularly in counterterrorism efforts against ISIS remnants in the region.
