DEM Party Co-Chair: Ocalan Must Oversee PKK Disarmament To Ensure Democratic Transition

People's Democracy and Equality Party (DEM Party) Co-Chair Tulay Hatimogullari stated that it is necessary for Abdullah Ocalan to supervise the PKK’s disarmament and dissolution process.
In an interview with Halk TV, Hatimogullari addressed what authorities call a “terror-free Turkey,” and responded to related questions.
Regarding the implementation of the 12th PKK Congress decisions, she said, “It is very important that he conducts the process,” adding, “We believe that if Ocalan himself is not allowed to conduct the process, things will not go properly. Therefore, the situation must be created for Ocalan.”
On whether there is division within the PKK, Hatimogullari said the group made the decision in a “unified manner” and that no rift is expected.
Commenting on the future of Qandil following the group’s departure after deciding to lay down arms and dissolve their organizational structure, she stated, “We believe that this process will move forward faster as the democratic struggle becomes stronger.”
She noted that there are around 10,000 political prisoners in Turkey, including Figen Yuksekdag and Selahattin Demirtas, as well as writers, intellectuals, journalists, and politicians. “If this country is democratized, no one should be imprisoned for expressing their opinion and considering freedom of expression a right,” she added.
When asked whether the DEM Party would join the People's Alliance formed by the AKP and MHP, Hatimogullari said their priority is democracy and building a democratic republic. “Our concern is the victory of democracy, and for this, a historic opportunity has emerged,” she said.
