Ammar Al-Hakim Urges Political Parties to Keep Government Institutions Away from Electoral Tensions

Ammar al-Hakim, leader of the National Wisdom Movement, on Saturday called for insulating government institutions from electoral tensions, as Iraq moves closer to the end of the current parliamentary term and preparations for the next elections begin.
“We are nearing the end of this term of the Iraqi parliament, and preparations for the elections have begun — a sign of the political system’s recovery and Iraq’s democratic stability over the past 22 years,” al-Hakim said during a speech delivered at the Eid al-Adha prayers.
He highlighted that government formation in Iraq is now determined by the ballot box, emphasizing that this reflects democratic progress.
Al-Hakim urged all political parties to refrain from dragging government institutions into political rivalries. “Competition must be within the framework of the development program,” he stated, calling for responsible electoral behavior.
He further stressed that building a modern and fair government requires an approach free from electoral fraud and the misuse of official positions. “This is the only way to maintain voter confidence, their insistence on voting, and their recourse to making change through the ballot box,” he added.
Addressing campaign strategies, al-Hakim said that the electoral contest should focus on realistic programs and practical solutions.
He warned against exaggerated promises and irresponsible rhetoric, urging political actors to prioritize credible and constructive discourse.
