Iraqi Border Commission Completes Integration of Kurdistan Region Checkpoints to Boost Oversight and Unify Customs

The Iraqi Commission of Border Crossing Points has announced that all checkpoints in the Kurdistan Region are now linked to the commission’s headquarters.
In a statement, the commission said the final checkpoint—Bawa Mahmoud in Diyala province—has been connected. The move is intended to strengthen oversight and ensure consistency in revenue collection, in line with Council of Ministers Decision No. 270 issued in 2025.
The commission noted that the goal is to eliminate discrepancies in customs duties applied at different border points.
In a related development, a letter dated June 1 from the Iraqi General Customs Directorate instructed all customs departments, including those in the Kurdistan Region, to apply increased tariffs on imported goods and vehicles. The customs duties, which previously began at 1%, now range from 10% to 30%. The decision aims to unify customs procedures across Iraq.
Earlier this month, Kamal Rauf, Director General of the Kurdistan Region’s Customs Directorate, told Channel8 that “the increase in customs duties will lead to higher prices for affected goods, with consumers ultimately bearing the initial cost.”
He added that the directorate will continue to follow the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) guidance and will implement federal customs decisions if instructed by the KRG.
