At Least 60 Killed in Gaza Strikes as Trump Predicts Ceasefire Within Days

Israeli airstrikes killed at least 60 people across Gaza from Friday into Saturday morning, according to officials from the Hamas-run health ministry.
Among the dead were 12 people near the Palestine Stadium in Gaza City, where many displaced residents had been seeking shelter. Hospital staff at Shifa hospital confirmed the bodies were brought there, the Associated Press reported.
Health officials also said more than 20 bodies were taken to Nasser Hospital following other strikes. A midday attack on Saturday killed 11 people on a street in eastern Gaza City, with their bodies transferred to Al-Ahli Hospital.
The escalation came as President Trump told reporters Friday that a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas could happen soon. “I think it's close,” he said from the Oval Office. “We think within the next week, we're going to get a ceasefire.”
So far, neither Israel nor Hamas has publicly commented on the status of any potential deal.
The Trump administration has been pressing for a pause in fighting since the president returned to the White House in January. Talks have remained stalled despite intermittent negotiations since Israel ended the last ceasefire in March, continuing its military operations and worsening Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.
Late last month, Mr. Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff proposed a 60-day ceasefire. Under the draft deal obtained by CBS News, Hamas would release 10 living hostages along with the remains of 18 dead hostages taken during Hamas’ 2023 attack on Israel. In return, Israel would release 125 prisoners serving life sentences, 1,111 other Palestinian detainees, and the remains of 180 deceased Palestinians.
