Macron Urges Iran to Resume Nuclear Talks, IAEA Cooperation in Call with President Pezeshkian

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke by phone on Sunday with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, stressing the importance of resolving nuclear and ballistic missile issues through diplomacy.
In a statement on the X platform, Macron said he emphasized the need for Iran to return to negotiations and allow the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to resume inspections of its nuclear facilities without delay.
Macron also underscored the importance of maintaining the current ceasefire to support broader regional stability.
Meanwhile, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, said on Sunday that conditions were not conducive to talks with the United States. “If the Americans want to impose their conditions, negotiations will be impossible,” Iravani said, adding that “uranium enrichment will not stop under any circumstances.”
Background: The 12-Day War
Tensions escalated sharply after the outbreak of a 12-day war between Israel and Iran beginning on June 13. The conflict saw Israel strike Iranian military, nuclear, and missile facilities, as well as assassinate high-ranking military commanders and nuclear scientists.
Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli territories, prompting the United States to intervene militarily. On June 21, U.S. forces launched coordinated airstrikes on three major Iranian nuclear sites: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
In response, Tehran launched retaliatory strikes on American military bases in Qatar and Iraq. No casualties were reported.
U.S. President Donald Trump declared a ceasefire on June 24.
In the aftermath, Iran accused the IAEA of failing to condemn the U.S. and Israeli attacks. On June 25, the Iranian parliament voted to suspend cooperation with the agency, further complicating international diplomatic efforts.
