Iraq’s Top Judge Retires Citing Health, Munthir Hussein Nominated as Replacement

Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council has announced the retirement of Chief Justice Jassim Muhammad Abboud from the Federal Supreme Court, citing health reasons for his departure.

In an official statement, the Council declared, “Judge Jassim Muhammad Abboud, Chief Justice of the Federal Supreme Court, has retired due to health reasons.”

The Council also confirmed the nomination of Judge Munthir Ibrahim Hussein as his successor. “The nomination of Judge Munthir Ibrahim Hussein, Vice-President of the Federal Court of Appeal, has been approved,” the statement added, noting that his appointment awaits a presidential decree.

The decision was made under Article 3 (First and Second) of the Federal Supreme Court Law No. 30 of 2005, as amended, which governs judicial retirement and appointment procedures.

Judge Munthir Ibrahim Hussein was born in Baghdad in 1963. He earned his law degree from the University of Baghdad in 1989 and graduated from the Judicial Institute in 1998. Since 2018, he has served at the Federal Court of Cassation, where he is Vice-President and Head of its Criminal Panel, in addition to being a reserve member of the Federal Supreme Court.
