Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian ordered on Wednesday the suspension of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after Israeli and American airstrikes targeted key nuclear sites.

The move, announced on state television, aims to limit external oversight of Iran’s uranium enrichment program, which has reached near weapons-grade levels.

“The government is mandated to immediately suspend all cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency,” the bill read, adding that the suspension would last “until certain conditions are met, including the guaranteed security of nuclear facilities and scientists.”

No specific details or timetables were provided. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi suggested diplomacy was not entirely off the table. “The doors of diplomacy will never slam shut,” he said in an interview with CBS News, though he added, “I don’t think negotiations will restart as quickly as that,” in response to President Trump’s comments that talks could resume within the week.

The suspension comes after Israeli airstrikes earlier in June targeted Iran’s Revolutionary Guard leadership, missile stockpiles, and nuclear facilities. Iran claimed 935 citizens were killed in the attacks, while the Washington-based Human Rights Activists group reported at least 1,190 dead, including hundreds of civilians and security forces.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the announcement, calling it a “scandalous renunciation of all its international nuclear obligations.” He urged European parties to Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal to trigger the snapback mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions.

Despite the suspension order, IAEA inspectors remain in Iran for now, with the agency awaiting official clarification. Experts note that while Iran’s decision undermines nuclear oversight, it stops short of abandoning the Nonproliferation Treaty altogether or fully expelling inspectors – actions that would signal an immediate rush towards building a nuclear weapon.
