The Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) announced on Saturday that a delegation will visit the Kurdistan Region to attend the first disarmament ceremony for PKK members.

In a statement, the DEM Party described the current period as “important and historic” in the process of “peace and democratic society,” marking a new era. It added that the party has played a facilitating role since the beginning of the process.

The DEM Party said the ceremony by PKK members is being held in line with decisions made during their congress.

The party stated it has invited 15 to 20 journalists, along with representatives of political parties and civil society organizations, to attend the ceremony and will travel with its delegation to the Kurdistan Region.

It added that there is no obstacle for other journalists to visit the Kurdistan Region independently and noted that the ceremony will take place with the knowledge of Turkish authorities.

The first disarmament ceremony for PKK members is scheduled to take place between July 10 and 12 in Sulaymaniyah.

Earlier, Zagros Hiwa, spokesperson for foreign relations at the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK), told the Associated Press that PKK members were destroying their weapons, overseen by “civil society institutions and interested parties.”

Hiwa highlighted the importance of providing guerrilla fighters who have ceased armed struggle with a clear pathway to reintegrate into Turkey’s democratic political process.

He added that the number of PKK members participating in the ceremony had not yet been determined but could be between 20 and 30.

In May, the PKK announced the conclusion of its 12th congress, during which it formally declared the end of its armed struggle and the dissolution of its organizational structure. The congress was held between May 5 and 7 across two locations in the Medya Defense Zones, with 232 delegates attending.

The PKK called for broad political engagement, urging the Turkish government, opposition parties, parliamentary groups, and civil society organizations to take what it described as their “historical responsibility” in advancing a democratic peace process.
