KRG Interior Ministry Accuses Federal Government of Covering Up Threats to Kurdistan Region

The Ministry of Interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has accused the federal government in Baghdad of failing to act on repeated security threats targeting the Kurdistan Region, alleging a pattern of negligence and cover-up.
In an official statement released on Saturday, the KRG Interior Ministry said:
“We expect the relevant authorities in the federal government to take necessary measures in the event of any threat to the Kurdistan Region—or any other part of Iraq. Unfortunately, we feel there is a kind of cover-up.”
The statement criticized the federal response to previous drone and missile attacks on the region, noting that while joint committees were formed and coordination took place at high levels between Erbil and Baghdad, “no action was taken against any party, despite clear evidence and identification of the sources of these attacks.”
“In recent years, the Kurdistan Region has been targeted dozens of times by drones and missiles. Although the direction and origin of these attacks were known and officially documented, no accountability has followed,” the ministry added.
The KRG Interior Ministry stressed that national security must not be compromised by political considerations, calling on all government institutions to prioritize public safety and uphold sovereignty.
“Regardless of political climates or party opinions, the protection of citizens' lives, the sovereignty of the country, and the stability of Iraq should be the top priority of both the Iraqi Federal Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government,” the statement concluded.
