Leaders of BRICS, meeting in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, called for negotiators to agree on a swift and unconditional ceasefire to end the nearly two-year war in Gaza.

"We exhort the parties to engage in good faith in further negotiations to achieve an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire," the bloc stated in their final summit declaration.

The 11-member group also demanded a “full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and all other parts of the Occupied Palestinian Territories.”

Their statement came as ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas resumed in Doha, amid mounting global pressure to end the conflict that erupted with Hamas’s attacks on October 7, 2023.

Israel’s retaliatory operations have so far killed at least 57,418 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory. The United Nations deems these figures credible.

The BRICS bloc includes Iran, a key adversary of Israel, alongside countries such as Russia, which maintains strong ties with Tel Aviv.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to visit the White House on Monday for talks with US President Donald Trump, who has been pushing for a ceasefire agreement in the coming week.
