Sanandaj Among Top Wheat Producers as Iran Reports 11 Million Tons, But Purchases Fall 35%
The head of Iran’s National Farmers’ Organization has announced that the country’s wheat production for this year has reached 11 million tons.
However, “3.4 million tons of farmers’ wheat have not yet been delivered to government silos,” leading to a sharp decline in official purchases.
Ataollah Hashemi, chairman of the organization, explained that due to the shortfall, “the government’s wheat purchases from farmers have fallen by 35% compared to last year.”
So far, 7.7 million tons of wheat have been handed over to the government, with Hashemi noting that “94% of payments owed to farmers have already been disbursed.”
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the provinces contributing the most wheat are:
- Khuzestan (1.5 million tons),
- Sanandaj/Kurdistan (800,000 tons),
- Golestan (over 600,000 tons),
- Fars (nearly 600,000 tons),
- Kermanshah (nearly 600,000 tons).
Together, these provinces represent the top five wheat-producing regions in Iran.
More than “40% of Iran’s food resources come from wheat,” and this year cultivation covered 6 million hectares, of which 2 million were irrigated wheat fields and 4 million were rain-fed.
