Hoshyar Siwaily, head of foreign relations for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), has welcomed an initiative by Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President Bafel Jalal Talabani to resume dialogue and reach an agreement on forming the Kurdistan Region’s tenth cabinet.
Speaking to Channel8, Siwaily said any constructive effort to bring political parties closer and advance government formation was welcome. He expressed hope that Talabani’s proposal would move beyond statements and lead to concrete steps in the coming days.
Talabani made his remarks during a panel titled “Building a Stronger Kurdistan: Unity, Security, and Regional Partnership” on the first day of the annual MERI Forum in Erbil.
He said meetings between KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani had been productive, adding that the PUK was sincere in its willingness to resume talks and reach a mutual understanding.
Talabani also stressed the need for internal political agreements to protect the Kurdistan Region’s political entity and said the PUK was ready to take practical steps in the interests of the people of Kurdistan.
The Kurdistan Region’s tenth cabinet has yet to be formed following the parliamentary election held on October 20, 2024. Talks between the KDP and PUK have focused on reaching an agreement over the structure and composition of the next government.
