The President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Bafel Jalal Talabani, welcomed Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Sulaymaniyah in a significant meeting that reinforced the deep historical and political ties between the Kurdistan Region and Iran.

The visit, hailed as historic, underscores the long-standing relationship first nurtured by the late President Jalal Talabani, affectionately known as Mam Jalal.

In a statement from the Press Office of the PUK, Talabani expressed appreciation for the enduring support of Iran, particularly during challenging periods such as the fight against ISIS. “We acknowledged their vital role in the fight against terrorism and the defeat of ISIS, working alongside the Kurdistan and Peshmerga forces,” Talabani remarked, emphasizing that this cooperation would continue to shape the region’s future.

Talabani also reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to regional stability, stating, “We will neither allow nor desire for the Kurdistan Region to be used as a platform to attack the sovereignty of neighboring countries, especially the Islamic Republic of Iran.” He stressed the importance of strengthening ties with Iran while ensuring peace and security for both nations.

During the meeting, President Pezeshkian expressed gratitude for the strong relationship between the two regions, praising Mam Jalal's pivotal role in fostering positive relations. "We respect this historic relationship and look forward to further development," Pezeshkian noted, assuring Iran's continued support for stability efforts in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Both leaders highlighted the significance of mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared commitment to maintaining peace in the region.
