The fire alarm at the Kehlsteinhaus, commonly known as the Eagle’s Nest, went off at about 9:15 p.m. on Friday, police said. Firefighters saw flames as they approached the site, which sits on a cliff at an elevation of 1,834 meters (6,017 feet).

The building’s location made it difficult to bring fire engines to the scene. Firefighting operations continued into Saturday morning, and access to the building and its immediate surroundings was restricted to personnel equipped with respiratory protection.

The building has operated as a cafe and restaurant since 1952 and houses an exhibition about its history. It was closed to visitors on Friday before the fire broke out.
