Iraq’s Population Reaches 46.1 Million, Census Reveals Key Demographic and Economic Insights

The Ministry of Planning has released the latest national census results, showing Iraq’s population has grown to 46.1 million, up from 45.4 million in preliminary estimates last November.
Urban vs. Rural Distribution
- Urban population: 70.17%
- Rural population: 29.83%
- Kurdistan Region urban population: 84.57%
Gender Ratio
- 101 males per 100 females, in line with global averages.
Age Distribution
- Under five years old: 11.16%
- Children (5-14 years): 24.74%
- Working-age population (15-64 years): 60.44%
- Elderly (65+ years): 3.66%
In Kurdistan, the working-age population is slightly higher at 63.92%, while the elderly population stands at 4.4%.
Marriage Trends & Marital Status
- Average age at first marriage: 22.24 years
- Men: 24.06 years
- Women: 20.7 years
- Marital Status in Iraq:
- Single: 41.6%
- Married: 54.01%
- Divorced: 1.28%
- Widowed: 2.8%
Birth & Mortality Rates
- Maternal mortality: 26.7 deaths per 100,000 live births (34.3 in Kurdistan).
