Mark Carney, former central banker, won the race to succeed Justin Trudeau as Canada’s Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader and is set to be sworn in in the coming days.

He won the election by a landslide with 86% of the vote, securing 131,674 votes, while Chrystia Freeland came second with just 11,134 votes.

In his acceptance speech, Mark Carney stated that Canada faces "dark, dark days, brought on by a country we can no longer trust."

He said this is a defining moment for Canada, "Democracy is not a given. Freedom is not a given. Even Canada is not a given."

Carney addressed the statements and policies made by the Trump administration and its stance toward Canada. “America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape or form,” Carney said, responding to Trump’s ongoing threat to make Canada the 51st state.

“The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country. Think about it. If they succeed, they would destroy our way of life,” he added.

Carney stated that his government will maintain tariffs until the Americans “show respect.”

He emphasized that Americans should not be mistaken, stating that in trade, as in hockey, Canada will prevail. Carney criticized Trump for attempting to weaken the economy, attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses, and vowed they won’t let him succeed.

“Donald Trump, as we know, has put unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell, on how we make a living,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Conservative Party issued a statement criticizing Carney, claiming he is "just like" Justin Trudeau.
