The Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs is continuing efforts to unify its forces, with the process of integrating Unit 70 and Unit 80 expected to be finalized before the end of this year.

As part of the ongoing reform, the Ministry is working to establish 11 joint divisions, each composed of four brigades. So far, four divisions have been completed, two are currently being formed, and five more are planned for future formation.

Despite the progress, Unit 70 and Unit 80 remain unchanged and have not yet been fully integrated into the structure of the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs.

Sirwan Barzani, Head of the Sixth Sector (Gwer-Makhmour Front), told Channel8, “The reunification and reform of the Peshmerga Ministry continues, and the 70 and 80 Units will be fully transferred to the Peshmerga Ministry in August and September this year.”

The US-led Coalition Forces continue to provide both financial and logistical support for the unification efforts. In addition to financial assistance, the Coalition is also offering training to the joint forces operating under the Ministry.

Lieutenant Omar Salih, commander of Unit 70, told Channel8, “There is a memorandum of understanding between the Peshmerga Ministry of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the US Department of Defense, and they will provide $11 million monthly financial assistance to the Peshmerga Ministry.”

He added, “The deadline for the unification of all Peshmerga forces is September 2026.”

Lieutenant Colonel Bakhtiar Mohammed, Secretary General of the Peshmerga Ministry, also confirmed to Channel8 that unification efforts are ongoing, noting that “11 divisions are scheduled to be formed, four of which have been formed so far.”

Meanwhile, the United States, the Coalition Forces, the European Union, and the broader international community are reportedly increasing pressure on the Kurdish political leadership and the Kurdistan Regional Government to expedite the reform process and the full unification of the Peshmerga forces.
