Tensions in Erbil’s Khabat Town as Security Forces Move on Tribal Leader Khurshid Harki
Tensions between security forces and members of the Harki tribe have intensified in the town of Khabat, Erbil province, following a reported raid on the home of prominent tribal leader Khurshid Harki.
According to Channel8’s correspondent, a second security convoy was dispatched from Erbil to Khabat on Tuesday in response to the escalating situation.
Local sources confirmed that security forces moved against Harki’s residence, triggering a standoff with his supporters. Rayan Khurshid Harki told Channel8 that both sides, security units and local youth remained in confrontation, though active gunfire had stopped.
Footage sent to Channel8 shows a security vehicle overturned and damaged by stones and bullets.
Haider Harki, Khurshid’s brother, said the conflict stems from a long-running land dispute with the Goran tribe. He stated that the land, once belonging to the Harki tribe, was officially returned to them after a formal complaint, but the Goran tribe refused to vacate it.
He added that a 35-year-old man was killed in the clashes and criticized the deployment of heavily armed forces, claiming they were of the same scale used in operations against ISIS.
Haider warned that Khurshid Harki would resist any further attempts at arrest unless the leader of the Goran tribe is also held accountable.
