Iranian authorities announced on Saturday that they have executed a man convicted of involvement in a fatal attack on security forces during the nationwide protests that swept the country in 2022.

According to the judiciary’s Mizan Online news outlet, Mehran Bahramian was accused of being part of a group that opened fire on a vehicle carrying security personnel in the city of Semirom, Isfahan province. The attack left one officer, Mohsen Rezaei, dead and several others injured on December 31, 2022.

The unrest broke out following the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian Kurd who died in police custody after being detained over alleged violations of Iran’s strict dress code for women. Her death triggered months of demonstrations that were met with a harsh crackdown.

Bahramian was tried by the Revolutionary Court of Isfahan, which found him guilty of “moharebeh” (waging war against God) for firing on security forces and inciting attacks on government sites. His death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court and carried out early Saturday morning. The judiciary described him as a “thug.”

During the 2022 protests, hundreds of demonstrators and security personnel were killed, and thousands of people were detained. Since then, Iran has conducted multiple trials and executions connected to the unrest.

In June, authorities executed Abbas Kurkuri, who had been convicted of killing seven people during the protests.

Rights groups, including Amnesty International, have condemned the executions, noting that Iran carries out more death sentences than any country except China.
