PKK Expected to Announce Next Step Toward Full Disbandment
Media outlets close to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) reported that the group is preparing to take what they described as a “historic step” on Saturday, as part of the implementation of resolutions adopted at the PKK’s 12th Congress.
The details of the move are expected to be officially announced in a statement tomorrow.
Evacuation of Bases and Headquarters
According to information obtained by Channel8 from several sources, the new phase is expected to involve the evacuation of several PKK bases and headquarters across multiple areas in the Kurdistan Region and along the Iraq–Turkey border.
Implementation of Congress Decisions
The anticipated move marks the continuation of the PKK’s plan to dissolve itself and end activities under its name, following directives attributed to its imprisoned leader, Abdullah Ocalan.
The first step in implementing the 12th Congress resolutions took place on July 11, 2025, when a group of 30 PKK members symbolically burned their weapons in Dukan district of Sulaymaniyah province.
Turkish Parliament Forms Commission
Following the PKK’s disarmament initiative, the Turkish parliament formed a committee named the National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Commission, comprising representatives of most major political parties. The body has been meeting regularly for three months to review proposals and is expected to present recommendations for amending several laws related to national reconciliation and minority rights.
PKK: “The Ball Is Now in Turkey’s Court”
PKK officials have repeatedly stated that they have fulfilled their responsibilities under the peace initiative, saying the next steps now depend on Ankara’s response. “The ball is in Turkey’s court,” one senior PKK member told affiliated media, urging the Turkish government to implement legal reforms that would support long-term stability and political inclusivity.
