Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met on Friday with U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Admiral Brad Cooper to review the timeline for transferring ISIS detainees from Syria to Iraq.

According to a statement from Al-Sudani’s office, the Iraqi government has conducted a regional security assessment and launched early border protection measures, including fortifications implemented for the first time. The Prime Minister also emphasized efforts to repatriate Iraqi families from camps while continuing political and security coordination with regional partners.

Al-Sudani praised Admiral Cooper’s role in facilitating the conclusion of the Global Coalition’s mission and the handover of Ain Al-Asad Air Base to Iraqi forces. He also welcomed the Coalition’s ongoing support in combating terrorism and confronting ISIS.

Admiral Cooper reaffirmed CENTCOM’s readiness to provide logistical and technical assistance to Iraq, ensuring continued cooperation at the highest levels.

Earlier this week, Iraq received its first group of ISIS detainees from northeastern Syria. The transfer included senior ISIS and Al-Qaeda operatives, some holding European citizenship, alongside Asian, Arab, and Iraqi nationals, according to security officials.

CENTCOM confirmed that the U.S. has begun moving detainees, starting with 150 prisoners, as part of a larger operation to relocate up to 7,000 ISIS fighters into secure Iraqi facilities.
