Cancer Cases Rise Across Kurdistan in 2025: Duhok, Erbil, and Sulaymaniyah Report Alarming Figures
Chakdar Ahmed, director of the Duhok Cancer Hospital, told Channel8 that “in 2025, 1,400 cancer cases were registered.”
He explained that compared to previous years, the numbers have increased: in 2023 there were about 1,300 cases, and in 2024 there were 1,205 cases.
Erbil Statistics
On February 4, World Cancer Day, the General Director of Health in Erbil announced that “the rate of cancer cases in 2025 is higher compared to 2024.”
Of those registered, 77% are residents of Erbil and surrounding areas, while 23% are from outside the city.
Sulaymaniyah Statistics
In Sulaymaniyah, 3,145 cancer cases were recorded in 2025. The most common types are breast cancer, followed by colon, lung, and prostate cancers.
The director of Hiwa Hospital in Sulaymaniyah stated that “in just the first month of this year, 285 cancer cases were registered, 20% of which are patients from outside Sulaymaniyah who come to Hiwa Hospital for treatment.”
