Omed Xoshhnaw, the Governor of Erbil, announced that the city was attacked by drones 10 times overnight, resulting in the loss of a security personnel's life at the airport. He called on the federal government to take measures to prevent terrorist groups from attacking the Kurdistan Region.

Xoshhnaw stated that many of the attacks were intercepted in the air by the Coalition's defense system. 

He noted that remnants of one of the downed drones fell near Erbil airport, and as a result, an airport security employee named Wlat Tahir, a father of two, lost his life. 

Three other security personnel were injured, with one in critical condition and under intensive medical care.

The Governor emphasized that the Kurdistan Region is constantly targeted by armed groups and urged  the Iraqi government to put an end to these terrorist attacks.

KRG Minister Condemns ‘Treacherous Attack’

Following the death of the security personnel, Ano Jawhar, the Minister of Transport and Communications of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), condemned the “treacherous attack in the strongest terms.”

Jawhar emphasized that the attacks targeted “our fellow citizens and the civilian and security personnel responsible for protecting public institutions." 

He stressed the need for the Iraqi federal government to fulfill its constitutional duty to safeguard its citizens and called for decisive action to halt the aggressors.

Ongoing Military Conflicts, Impacting Kurdistan Region Infrastructure

The attacks on major cities and locations in the Kurdistan Region intensified amid ongoing military conflicts last week, as the U.S. and Israel launched a joint campaign against Iran in response to threats related to the country’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. 

Recent attacks have damaged infrastructure, prompting the Ministry of Natural Resources to shut down the Khor Mor gas field. HKN Energy has also suspended production at Sarsang, with electricity supplies reduced to conserve resources. 

Earlier, the KRG condemned these attacks by “outlaw groups” operating within Iraq, which seek to target Kurdish economic infrastructure and public assets.

Meanwhile, six drone strikes targeted various locations in and around Sulaymaniyah overnight, causing material damage.
