Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi announced Sunday that one of two Japanese nationals detained in Iran has been freed. The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was released on Wednesday and is expected to return to Japan soon.

According to Japanese media, the person had been taken into custody in Iran in June. Jiji Press reported, citing diplomatic sources, that the release came after Iranian authorities determined the individual’s prison term had ended.

Motegi said the development followed his “strong calls” to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for the detainees’ release. He confirmed that a second Japanese national remains in detention but declined to provide details.

In January, Iranian authorities arrested the Tehran bureau chief of NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, and sent him to a prison known for housing political prisoners. While Motegi did not confirm whether the remaining detainee is the NHK journalist, he emphasized that Japan is in contact with the person’s family and working toward an early release.
