The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad warned on Sunday that universities in Iraq linked to the United States could be targeted amid escalating threats from Iran and Iran-aligned militias.

The embassy said institutions in Baghdad, Sulaymaniyah and Duhok were among potential targets, along with other sites perceived to have U.S. ties.

“Iran and Iran-aligned terrorist militias pose an escalating threat to public safety in Iraq,” the embassy said in a security alert, adding that such groups have previously carried out attacks on U.S.-associated targets across the country, including in the Kurdistan Region.

The warning comes as part of a broader advisory urging U.S. citizens to leave Iraq immediately, citing ongoing risks from missiles, drones and rocket fire.

The embassy also cautioned Americans against approaching diplomatic facilities and said Iraq remains under a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory.
