Iraq’s foreign ministry announced Monday that its air defense systems had not detected any drones launched from its territory toward Saudi Arabia.

The statement followed Saudi Arabia’s claim late Sunday that it intercepted and destroyed three drones entering from Iraqi airspace. Riyadh warned it “reserves the right to respond at the appropriate time and place.”

In response, Baghdad said it had opened an investigation “to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” stressing that its surveillance systems had recorded no launches. The ministry urged Saudi authorities to share information to ensure accuracy and strengthen security between the two countries.

No Iraqi faction has claimed responsibility for the drones. The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February. Tehran-backed Iraqi groups retaliated by targeting U.S. facilities in Iraq and across the Gulf.

Last month, Saudi Arabia and five other Arab states issued a joint statement demanding Iraq prevent attacks from its territory by Iran-aligned armed groups. Iraqi officials have repeatedly insisted that their soil will not be used to stage assaults against neighboring countries.
