Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani held talks with Mazloum Abdi, the General Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), emphasizing a shared commitment to safeguarding the rights of the Kurdish people in Syria.

Barzani received Abdi in Erbil on Tuesday and “exchanged views on the latest developments and changes in the overall situation in Syria and the Kurdish issue in that country.”

Both parties reached a mutual consensus on the critical importance of “preserving the security and stability of Syria.”

Furthermore, they underscored their joint dedication to protecting the fundamental rights of the Kurdish population alongside all other regional components.

Nechirvan Barzani and Abdi Discuss Kurdish Issues with Damascus

Abdi arrived in Erbil earlier today and met with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani to discuss the current situation in Western Kurdistan (Rojava) and Syria.

They stressed “dialogue and mutual understanding among the Kurdish factions in Syria to resolve their issues with Damascus.”

Kurdistan Region Diplomatic Efforts and Historic SDF-Damascus Agreement

The Kurdistan Region has long served as a vital diplomatic mediator and logistical lifeline for the SDF amidst their ongoing tensions with the central government in Damascus.

Following a military offensive by Damascus forces on SDF-held territories in January this year, Erbil actively supported international mediation to prevent total conflict. 

These urgent efforts culminated in a historic comprehensive agreement, under which the SDF agreed to a phased integration into the Syrian state and military institutions, on the condition that the fundamental rights of the Kurdish people are constitutionally protected.
