Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), held high-level talks in Erbil with Turkey's Ambassador to Iraq, Anil Bora Inan, according to an official statement from the PUK President's press office. The diplomatic session focused on regional security and stalled government formation.

The diplomatic session was also attended by Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, and Erman Topcu, the Turkish Consul General in Erbil. The leaders conducted a comprehensive review of the current security and political landscape across Iraq, stressing that direct coordination remains essential for preserving regional peace.

Balancing Power in Erbil and Baghdad

A central focus of the meeting was the complex process of forming the next Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet following recent parliamentary elections. Presenting the PUK’s strategic blueprint, Bafel Talabani stated firmly that any viable future administration must be built on "political balance and true partnership," hinting that the group will reject any framework that seeks to marginalize its influence.

Talabani also addressed the long-standing friction between Erbil and the federal government in Baghdad. He emphasized that resolving outstanding financial, oil, and territorial disputes must be strictly guided by the Iraqi Constitution.

"The normalization and improvement of ties between Erbil and Baghdad have always positively reflected on the daily lives and public services of our people," Talabani noted, adding that the PUK is committed to sustaining this constructive momentum.

Breakthroughs in Kirkuk Praised

The situation in the oil-rich, ethnically diverse province of Kirkuk featured prominently during the talks. Ambassador İnan reportedly lauded the diplomatic efforts of both Bafel Talabani and the PUK leadership in successfully mediating between rival factions to stabilize the local governance structure.

The delegation closed the meeting by mutually reaffirming the strategic necessity of expanding economic and diplomatic ties between Turkey, federal Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region based on strict reciprocity and shared regional interests.
