A Syrian energy official has confirmed to Channel8 that Syria and Iraq have signed memorandums of understanding to rehabilitate the Kirkuk–Baniyas oil pipeline, a project aimed at creating a new export route for Iraqi crude and strengthening regional energy connectivity.

Strategic Energy Corridor

Mohammed Nour Ahdab, Director of Media at the Syrian Petroleum Company, told Channel8 that the rehabilitation of the Kirkuk–Baniyas pipeline is among the region's most significant strategic energy projects. He said the pipeline would provide Iraq with an alternative route for crude exports, reducing dependence on a single transit corridor, while restoring Syria's role as a key energy transit country.

International Consortium to Lead Project

Ahdab said the project advanced after the Syrian Petroleum Company and Iraqi officials signed two memorandums of understanding. An international consortium comprising U.S. energy company Chevron, Qatar's UCC Holding, and TI Capital will participate in implementing the project.

Feasibility Studies Before Construction

He noted that the agreements mark the beginning of the planning phase rather than immediate construction. Technical, engineering, financial, and economic feasibility studies will be carried out before a final implementation agreement is signed and a project timeline is established.

Expected Export Capacity

According to Ahdab, the pipeline is expected to carry between 1.5 million and 2 million barrels of crude oil per day once operational. He said the project would generate significant transit revenues for Syria while strengthening regional energy links connecting Iraq with Syria and onward to Jordan, Turkey, and the Gulf region.
